The Palm Pre - A push in a new direction
For years, Palm was the top company when it came to PDAs and smart phones. Their product lineup featured solid hardware design and ran on the Palm OS. The OS was supported by a strong user base, which meant great apps were always being developed for the system. Recently however, Palm has suffered from a lack of innovation, relying on their old successes for sustenance. Meanwhile, they've suffered tough competition from Apple and Blackberry who have captured most of the market share Palm once dominated. The Palm Pre hopes to change all of that. The device features a completely new OS which promises to integrate the internet seamlessly. The Palm hopes to have an advantage on its competitors by carving out its own niche. The ability to multitask makes the device better for work than the iPhone, which can only run apps one at a time. It is also more media friendly than the Blackberry, making it very appealing for business types and standard consumers. Look out for this to be released in the early summer.
The Amazon Kindle has lofty ambitions
The Amazon Kindle has an impressive set of goals. It hopes to be the first mainstream e-book reader device, aiming to do that by having intelligent hardware and books consumers want to read. The Kindle is a device that is easy to read, using e-ink to display the pages. The electronic books are cheaper than paper and users love the portability of the device. I wonder if this is truly the beginning of a new era in the world of e-books. Would you read your textbook from a device like that? I would, it's way easier than lugging around a textbook. The Kindle comes in a variety of sizes and prices, it is available now.
