History of Dancehall Music
- Is the predecessor of raggae and the dj dub version of Reggae music.
- Came out of JA in the 1970s
- The format used in the dancehall or bashment were the styles of rappers and dj's of modern times.
- They would toast or rap over riddims instead of the regular pre-recorded content, and many DJ's became household names such as Shabba Ranks, Yellowman, Barrington Levy, and King Jammy
- Today's lyircs are more mysoginistic, homophobic,and violent which makes the genre of music not liked by most in the world. At the same time it still is a form of music that is still popular, because in this music there are things being said that others would be afraid of saying. Buju Banton's song in the 1990's Boom Bye Bye displayed the hate and non tolerance that some have for homosexuals in an around the world.
- Today's popular lyrics are "slack" lyrics or the X-rated form of content.
- The difference being the generations for instancve: people over 30 years old would still listen exclusively to the cousin of dancehall, reggae and those under 30 listened to dancehall music.
- The prominent artists today are Shaggy, Sean Paul, Movado, Vybz Kartel, Elephant Man, Bounty Killer, and Beenie Man.
