At an early age, my parents knew I had an ear for music. From grabbing instruments and playing them correctly, to knowing how to dance by age 4. My parents knew I'd have a future in music. By the age of 7, I became fond of hearing music being mixed. I found it astonishing how people can do that. Unfortunately my parents didn't have the funds to help me pursue such an interest. But I had a cousin who was a DJ who did and had decided to take me under his wing. One summer evening, my family was having a party and my cousin was the DJ. As he played music, I sat behind him and learned what each and every button did on his DJ equipment. He was set up in a bed room, so the muffled sound led me to focus more on everything he was doing. For a moment, he had to go to the bathroom. The song he left playing was about to finish and he was nowhere to be found. I immediately jumped in and decided to start to DJ. After about 4 songs in, people wanted to compliment the DJ for playing good consistent songs back to back, but to their surprise, it was me as the DJ. When my cousin came back, he couldn't believe that a 7 year old was playing music that good. By the end of the party, no one wanted to leave and wanted the party to continue, but I was 7 and sleepy. From there on I knew my true passion with music, was to be a DJ. After that I had to DJ mostly all of my family parties. As I got older, I was able to DJ other peoples' parties outside the family. Neighbors, family friend’s parties and even school parties. By the time I got to High School, I felt I needed to expand. So I started to search on who can help me expand. I knew of a family friend who was my same age and lived in my building that was also a DJ and was as eager as me to become bigger. After speaking to him, we then became partners. We made business cards and let everyone in school know we are DJ's. Unfortunately, we still lacked the funds to purchase our own equipment, so we had to rent. We decided to rent equipment from a famous group called Infinit Sound. They provide equipment and DJ services for many famous and wealthy people. On our first school party, they provided us with equipment, but little did we know, that the owner of the group would be supervising the equipment the entire night. By the end of the night, he was astonished at our performance. He immediately offered us internship in his group and from there, I and my partner knew this was the opportunity we were looking for. For 4 years, every summer, every weekend I had an event to participate in. Whether it be carrying speakers to an event for a famous artist, or DJ, I always had fun. After countless parties, festivals, parades and clubs, I felt like nothing could stop me. But one summer morning I received the news that one of my best friend/ DJ from the group had passed away from an asthma attack. It left me devastated and led me to retire from DJ and focus more on obtaining and education and a day job. After a couple of years of not touching a DJ equipment, I started to miss seeing a crowd jumping and enjoying my music. I decided to come back to the DJ scene in 2011. Many things had changed between the time I retired and came back. From the people who needed my services to DJ equipment. It almost felt like I was new to being a DJ. So I incorporated the same technique I used to learn with my cousin but as an adult. I watched YouTube videos, club DJ's and even went out and bought my very own equipment. After I felt ready, I went on and joined a family friend/DJ/ interior decorator on his pursuit to becoming famous. For 3 years, that man had provided me with a minimum of at least 2 parties every single weekend. I never knew someone could do so many baby showers, sweet 16's, birthdays, and wedding receptions and even funerals...YES I have been the DJ for funerals. Along with all these parties, I started to feel like I can get into the big leagues and start doing clubs and lounges. Now I do 5 events in 3 lounges a week. Hopefully this is just the beginning of something amazing. What I do know is that no matter what, I shall always be a DJ at heart. |
