Hermetic Principles and Beliefs

Hermeticism is considered the basis of many occult and religious groups. Here are the seven main principles of Hermeticism.

I. Principle of Mentalism

This principle states that the universe is a mental creation in the infinite mind of "the all". The all is "that which transcends names and items". It is considered "unknowable" to man and can be likened to God.

II. Principle of Correspondence

"As above so below; as below, so above." This principle spoke of the microcosm and macrocosms present within ourselves and throughout our universe. From bacteria and atoms to supernovas in galaxies.

III. Principle of Vibration

This principle states that everything vibrates and is always in motion, this principle corroborates the theory in which scientists have stated items that we consider solid are actually fast moving atoms. This the same principle taught by Hermes over a thousand years ago.

IV. Principle of Polarity

This principle states that everything is a duality. "Opposites are the same, differing only in degree", an example being hot versus cold, same idea, just varying in degrees.

V. Principle of Rhythm

This principle deals with the idea that there is an ebb and flow to this reality along with everything that happens in the universe. There is a cycle to everything, moving back and forth like a swinging pendulum.

VI. Principle of Cause and Effect

This principle states that there is no such thing as coincidence and everything happens as per the law. The idea of karma also can be applied here.

VII. Principle of Gender

This principle states that everything possesses masculine and feminine elements. In our material reality, this is manifested into "sex" such as in terms of a man and woman. In terms of nature, we see this principle when we say "mother earth" and "father sky".
