Barcelona Sporting Club was founded by Eutimio Pérez, a Spanish
immigrant who decided to name the club after his home city of Barcelona, Spain
on May 1, 1925 in the city of Guayaquil. As you know there is another Barcelona
in Spain, and many people said that we tried to copy them because of the fact that it has the same name, and also the same symbol, but it’s not like
that because of the fact that Barcelona got his name just because of the
support his first president gave them, who was from Spain, and due to that
they gave this team its name.
Barcelona has been changing his uniform colors since then. The
initial colors were black shorts with bright white shirts, and black socks.
Barcelona won promotion to its division which gave them the opportunity to go
to the first category where most of the good team are, and this happened the
same year they were founded. By 1927, they started changing the colors of the
uniform by using a yellow shirt and vertical red stripes, red socks and shorts.
In 1990 Barcelona saw its first achievement to Copa Libertadores
where most of the good teams play, and Barcelona was the first Ecuadorian team
to do it, and at that time Barcelona made people feel happy, and excited to see
their team playing the finals, where they played a Paraguayan team named
Olimpia. Then in 1992 the same thing happened. They went to the finals but unfortunately
they didn’t win, where they lose to Vasco de Gama.
As you can see, the colors of this team has changed over the
years. The major change came in 1935 when they used Barcelona’s flag in a
circle, with a triangle behind it bearing the team's initials. In 1955, after the
team won their first championship in the city of Guayaquil, the team adopted
their current crest, which is similar to FC Barcelona's, but they made some
changes so it could look similar but not exactly the same, where they included
the number of spikes, the color of the ball, border color, and the initials.
Their traditional colors have been yellow, and black with their home kit being
yellow since 1950’s.
Barcelona has played in four stadiums. Their first stadium was
George Capwell, which is their main rival Emelec’s stadium because of the fact
that it was the only stadium in Guayaquil. In 1959, they moved to a brand new
stadium named Estadio Modelo where they shared it with Emelec and Patria. After
a while the president Isidro Romero Carbo decided to start a new project which
was to give Barcelona their own stadium. Isidro Romero Carbo to Jaime Nebot
who is Guayaquil’s mayor, and he also talk to the president of Ecuador at
that time named Leon Febres Cordero, and the good thing about it was that both
of them were Barcelona’s fans, so then they decided to help the team by building
them a brand new stadium. Jaime Nebot donated a huge ground, The San Eduardo
garbage dump site, for construction and Febres Cordero helped with the money.
In 1986, Romero started building the new stadium, and in 1987 Barcelona open his brand
new stadium to the people which has a capacity of around 90,000 fans. La Sur Oscura ( The Dark South) is the biggest fan-bases in the country. During home games they are located in the southern end of Estadio Monumental.
