Top Gear is a British series focusing on motor vehicles, mostly automobiles. The very first episode appeared in 1977 as a motoring magazine program. In 2001 BCC officials decided to cancel the show. In 2002 they relaunched the show into what we know today. On the first season, the hosts were Jeremy Clarkson (main host), Richard Hammond, Jason Dawe and The Stig, although Hammond and Clarkson appeared on most segments without Jason. James May replaced Jason Dawe in the start of the second season and forward.

The show is shot in a village named Dunsfold in England. The studio is at the Dunsfold Aerodrome, an airport and park. The studio is based in a hanger, and use the old runways and taxiways as the race track. The track was actually designed by the car company Lotus.

The show has officially been on since 2002. It has a total of 22 seasons and 174 total episodes. There are also country versions of the show. They are, Top Gear (USA), Top Gear Australia, Top Gear Russia, Top Gear Germany, and Top Gear Korea. There are also spinoffs like, "Stars in Fast Cars", "James May's Car of the People" and "Top Ground Gear Force".

They have many segments like, Car reviews, "stars in reasonably priced cars", "the news" and "the cool wall", but their most popular segments will have to be their races, challenges, specials and stars in reasonably priced cars.

Stars in reasonably priced car starts off with Jeremy interviewing an athlete, actor, singer etc, after the interview they put them into "reasonably" priced cars for example a Ford Focus, and the star does laps around the track. They then take down the star's best lap and rank them on their leaderboard.

The races are some of the most popular segments when the hosts (usually Clarkson) choices any car he likes and races the other hosts while they are on trains, boats, bikes, etc. from point A to point B. Of course there are regular drag races and lap racing also.

The challenges usually involve stunts like jumping a bus over cars or turning cars into boats and see if they will work. Some of the more notable are the "cheap car" challenges. This is where the hosts are given a budget and have to buy cars within set budget. Then they compete against each other in series of challenges such as, long journeys to test the cars reliability and fuel economy, races and more.

The specials have had the hosts travelling long distance across a country in vehicles purchased on a budget. In 2006, they featured an Olympic sporting event special as example.
