The Summer Olympics is a major international event occuring every four years that is organized by the International Olympic Committee. Medals are awarded in each sporting event that take place in the Olympics, with gold medals for first place, silver for second and bronze for third place. This major event attracts many people, even those who are not big sports fans, from around the world to travel to the hosting city to support their country and show some patriotism. Even the world's greatest athletes come to compete in the Olympics to represent their country, even though they don't get paid to compete besides the prize money that comes from winning a medal.
The 2012 Summer Olympics is going to be held in London, making London the first city to host the Olympic Games three times. London was officially elected as the hosting city after winning a four round bidding that took place in 2005. There were nine cities that had submitted to host the 2012 Olympics. These cities were Havana, Istanbul, Leipzig, London, Madrid, New York City, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro. Paris was considered the favorable city to host and was London's closest competion during the four round bidding. The celebrations in London after winning the bidding were short-lived, being overshadowed by terrorist attacks on London's transportation system less than 24 hours after the announcement.
The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) was created to begin staging the Games after the success of the bid and help their first meeting in October 2005. The committe is in charge of setting up the games, while the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is in charge of constructing venues and other infrastructure. The 2012 Olympic Games will use a mixture of new venues, existing and historic facilities, and temporary facilities to stage the games.
