- Nintendo has a long and successful history in the video game industry, beginning with creating Japanese playing cards in 1889 , and eventually releasing their first home console, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), in 1985 . The NES helped rebound the failing video game industry in the United States, and Nintendo continued to release new consoles and handhelds, including the Game Boy, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and most recently, the Nintendo Switch. Along with their hardware innovations, Nintendo has also been known for creating iconic video game franchises, such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon.
- The PlayStation brand of video game consoles and handheld devices has evolved significantly since the first console's release in Japan in 1994. With five home consoles, two handheld devices, a media center, and a smartphone, as well as an online service and multiple magazines, PlayStation has become an integral part of the video game industry. The original PlayStation console was the first to ship over 100 million units and its successor, the PlayStation 2, is the best-selling home console of all time. Subsequent consoles, including the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, have continued to be successful, with the PlayStation 4 becoming the fastest-selling console in history. The latest console in the series, the PlayStation 5, was released in 2020 and sold 10 million units in its first 249 days, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation console to-date. Along with their hardware innovations, PlayStation has also been known for creating iconic video game franchises, such as Gran Turismo, God of War, and Uncharted.
- Since the original Xbox was introduced in November 2001, Microsoft has released five video game consoles under the Xbox brand , including the Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, and the latest model, the Xbox Series X/S, which was released in November 2020. Along with their hardware innovations, Xbox has also developed a comprehensive online service, the Xbox network, as well as the Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming. While initially trailing behind competitors like PlayStation, Xbox has become a major player in the video game industry and continues to release innovative hardware and software solutions.
