Background

My passion for technology started at an early age in my childhood, when I was six years old living with my parents. My mother came home one night with a surprise for me. She even had it wrapped in a box. As a kid I was already exicited, but when I opened the box I saw this amazing Gameboy purple and I began to cry. I loved this Gameboy with a passion and I played Pokemon yellow for days and days. Until one day it did not want to turn on and I was annoyed, sad and curious to why it was not workoing anymore. Since that day I have always been attracted to the idea of fixing electronics. Not only that, coming from a poor family where people will fix any item they have until it fully is not functional anymore, so when I will always try to fix the device in order to elongate the device's life span. There was only one problem though, my parents were scared for me when I opened my Gameboy and they yelled at me and told me that I might get shocked or even blow up in my face. But of course I did not listen to them because I was very curious, so I kept it a secert.

Having this used Gameboy Purple was amazing because I used to fight me sister about using hers and she never let me. As soon as my gave me my Gameboy I rubbed it in my sister's face. Now I was able to play me game when ever I wanted without begging my sister to lend me hers. After a month of playing Pokemon, dropped my Gameboy onto the floor from my bunk bed because I fell asleep. Once the Gameboy laned on the floor I woke up and began to panic and I hid it in my underwear drawer. My sister as nosey as she is asked me about the Gameboy and I did not know what to say so I told her that I lend it to my friend that lived next door and she let it go for now. But I knew she would keep asking me for it, so I had to fix it before she discovered I broke it. So I went into my father toolbox and got a flat head, phillips screwdriver and a napkin for the screws. I was already with the screen taken apart when my parents walked in and yelled at me because the Gameboy was taken apart. So, they hid it from me and I did not finish fixing it and they told me that they will take it a shop to fix it. I could not let that happen, so on the night before, I found it and I found the problem that the bolt that was holding the battery in the back was bent and loose so I bent it back in place and tighten it and then it worked! I was so elated that I played all night.

The moment I realized what I was able to do with my Gameboy, I became obessed and more interested in learning more about electronics and how they operate. I began to look up information in the internet about how to resolve common computer issues and as far as how to hack someone's computer. After that,I began to look for technology related books and magazines at my local library. Then every time a family member or friend had a technical issue, I would try to fix it even if it was something that I have never dealt with before. I consider this to be a challenge so, I would try simple troubleshooting steps like turning off the device and turning it back on, and many other similar steps. If those steps did not work, I would try to find the best solution to their problem and let that person know. As I got older I started to realize that information tecnology was more important to people and protecting their data. In my school at the time I started to ask questions to my teachers and they reffered me to a middle school that had lego robictics and I was interested.

Getting into Information technology

The very first thing that people recommended me for trying to get a foot in the door with little to none experience was to get certified. Getting a computer technician certification will put you at the top of some recruiters list, although getting a certification does not guarantee you will get a job, it get more people looking at your resume, I saw this as an opportunity to get to get the door. As I searched for more advise, I saw that getting into roles self doing customer service/technical support roles would help you move up in the company and gain experience. Many of those friendly strangers that shared their stories with the world started at the very bottom but managed to moved their way up. I started looking at job portals for Helpdesk positions, but my schedule did not work out. Since I was already enrolled in school, taking morning classes it was hard for me to get the type of job I was looking for. So I decided to make a move within the company I was in. At the time I was working at BestBuy as a Merchandiser/Inventory staff. I saw a position available at the Geek Squad, I applied for it and unfortunately I did not get it because they were more qualified applicants applying to the same position. Even though it was a let down hearing back from them and letting me know that they decided to go with a different applicant, it also motivated me to work harder towards my goal. I started making friends with those that worked at the Geek Squad and started getting myself familiarized with the procedures. I kept looking at open position in different stores, I really wanted to get a position as a consultation agent at Geek Squad because it will expose me to many different issues, even things I never experienced before. A few months later I found two open positions and I decided to apply for both of them to get a better chance of getting a call back. Two to three weeks later I get the call back and was scheduled to come by for an interview. About two days after I get the call back saying that I have an offer. This was great because now I can learn more and be up to date with the newest tech.

I started researching for ways to obtain my CompTia A+ certification. So I decided to investigate about a course that will teach me more and prepare me for the A+ certification. Working 30-35 hours a week and going to school full time was making it a little hard for me to try this program I found name Npower. Npower is a 22 week training course for the A+ and a internship. I could not do this program because I was going to school and working, so I decided to take the next semester off in order to do this program. I started the program and 5-7 weeks in, I became CompTia A+ certified, without having to pay them a penny. After completing the program, Npower helped me obtain an internship at Citi group as a project manager for techology. After this internship, I updated my resume and started applying to new jobs again , my goal was make it into the private/public sector. I did not want to continue to work in retail because of the crazy hours and the inconsistency of the schedule. This made me want to get my resume updated and start applying for as many open positions as I could to see what I was able to land after getting my certification. After going to a few different interviews I still have not found a job with hours that can work with me school schedule. Until then I have continue to improve my skills and be able to keep myself updated with technology. And to believe that all this started with a Gameboy.
