Improvements in Discs

Games have gone from being internally programmed into games to Discs in just about 40 years which seems like a long time to some and not that long to others. Games started out as being internally installed into the game and didn't really give much of variety in gaming and were really repetitive. Then shortly after cartridges were made that either had all the information for the game in the cartridge that would allow the gamer to play a variety of games as long as they had the cartridges for them. Then in 1982 and from there game consoles stopped using cartridges for their gaming. Handheld consoles on the other hand still use cartridges till today. Some consoles had different sized CD's for their games some examples are the Nintendo GameCube which used a smaller disc for their games and a memory card to save your data on. Video game consoles use memory cards to hold saved game data. Cartridge-based systems primarily used battery-backed volatile RAM within each individual cartridge to hold saves for that game. The Neo Geo AES, released in 1990 by SNK, was the first video game console able to use a memory card. Memory cards became commonplace when home consoles moved to read-only optical discs for storing the game program. Game consoles then moved to internal HDD's that had larger spaces for storing data and could also download your games onto.
