Culture:
Considering the size of the country (the Gambia) and the population it entails, one would conclude by saying it is a country with a huge diversity. This small nation of eleven thousand square miles and population of two millions and two hundred thousand approximately, has seven major languages and tribes. These majors tribes include the Mandinkas, Fulas, Wolofs, Jolas, Sarahulehs, Serers, and Akus.
The Mandinkas known as Mandingo are the largest tribe of the Gambia and they are estimated to be about forty-two percent of the total population of the country. If you have been to the Gambia, it would not be a surprise for you.
The mandinkas were said to have come form the ancient Mali Empire and Kabu Empire originally. The Mandinkas are spread all over West Africa but highly concentrated in Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Guinea Bissau,The Gambia, Sieraleone, Burkina Faso and slightly the Ivory Coast. They occupied big numbers in the North bank region, Lower river and Central river regions and also spread around every other region in the Gambia.
The Mandinkas are very popular with their twenty-one tiring musical instrument call the Kora. They also have what they call "jamba dong or kankurang". Traditionally these are the most famous forms of entertainment in the Mandinka societies. Mandinkas in the Gambia are found in every field, they are politicians, intellectuals, farmers and businessmen.
The Fula or Fulani are the second largest tribe in the Gambia and approximately about eighteen percent of the population. The Fulas are the most widespread African tribe found literally all over Africa and big numbers in west Africa. In fact, some scholars believed that the Fulani is the second largest tribe in Africa after the Housa. The Fulas has a very lengthy and rich history. Some researchers believed that the Fulas are either Caucasians or Semites who entered across the Sahara Desert and some believed that they are descendants of the Berbers who came to West Africa to trade and spread the religion of Islam. In west Africa alone, the fulas has more than nine dialects. Traditionally, the Fulas are herdsmen, but lately in the late nineteen century they drifted a bit and venture in to some other occupations like farming, trade, intellectuals and even politics. for Example, the late Thomas Sangareh of Burkina Faso was a Fulani, the late Ousmane Danfodio Upper Niger Region of Nigeria, Idriss Debi of Tc had, current president of Nigeria Bukari and the first secretary General of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) Diallo Telli was also a Fulani.
Naturally, the fulas has beautiful features light skin, pointed nose, sexy body, long slim face or beautiful round face either way you will find the fulas beautiful.
The Wolofs are the third largest tribe in the Gambia occupying about sixteen percent of the population. The wolofs are in most case farmers and traders, naturally peaceful people and yet loud neighbors. They like to have fun and very instrumental when it comes to entertainment. The Wolfs are renowned Drummers and Dancers of Sabar and the Zimba, they are the backbone of the modern music of Mbalax (Ndaga), where Yousou Ndure is the king.
The Jolas (Ajamatau) took fourth position on the population occupancy in the Gambia approximately ten percent. The name Jola though comes from the Mandinkas meaning someone who pays back either a debt or services or a revenge of something bad done to him or her.
The Jolas were originally traced from Cassamance region which is the southern part of Senegal. In the Gambia they are highly concentrated in the Western Region of the country, the Fonis and the Kombos. They are very famous for the "Bukarabu" dance festival in which they have one expert drummer drumming five drums at the same time. The Bukarabu dance is one dance you want to see when ever you make it to the Gambia.
The Combination of the Sarahuleh, Serere, Aku and others is the remaining percentages of the population of the nation.
Gambians are peaceful people, all these tribes live together peacefully. They inter marry among themselves, rejoice each others happiness and grieve each others sadness. The Gambian culture is one loving nation with so much to offer, people love, respect and embrace each others culture, living like one big family of different cultures.
History:
The Gambia is little banana shape country surrounded by Senegal on three dimensions which are the North, South, East and the West is the Atlantic ocean. I believe that is the main reason why the Gambia existed as a nation of its own. Since the British were very strategic during the colonial era, they curve the Gambia out of Senegal and make it their own colony and that is to say it was colonized by the British.
