Welcome to Homeless Shelter Locations in NYC

Hello, my name is Bryan Cortes and I'm the creator of Homeless Shelter Locations. This website tries to combat the homeless crisis occurring in NYC by listing all of the shelter location in the five boroughs and the steps needed to be accepted to a shelter that’s right for the individual. Chances are you have walked by or shared a train car with someone who is homeless, know someone personally who has been homeless or even experienced homelessness yourself.Today, more New Yorkers are experiencing homelessness than ever before. In a city of more than 8.3 million people, nearly one in every 106 New Yorkers is homeless — that’s nearly 80,000 men, women and children. Every night, nearly 2,400 people sleep on the street, in the subway system or in other public spaces. However, the vast majority of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness spend the night within the city’s shelter system where they remain unseen. Unfortunately, the issue doesn't have an end in sight. We believe that affordable housing, sufficient food and the chance to work for a living wage are fundamental rights in a civilized society.

Securing Shelter

The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) homeless shelter system provides temporary, emergency shelter if you are a homeless family, a single pregnant woman, or a single adult. DHS operates the shelter services system and assists individuals in addressing and overcoming their homelessness to secure and sustain permanent housing. To enter a shelter, an individual must first visit an Intake Center. Reasonable accommodations can be requested during the intake process. People with disabilities are encouraged to bring medical documentation to request reasonable accommodations. After going through the intake process, people with disabilities will be transferred to a shelter facility that most suits their needs.

Homeless Drop-in Centers

Drop-in centers offer some social services and allow single adults who have nowhere else to stay to come indoors for the night and sleep in a chair, away from the elements outdoors. It is important to note that you have a right to shelter, but if you are not interested in a shelter placement, a drop-in center might be another option. Some drop-in centers also have connections to faith-based shelters where clients can get a bed for one night at a time.

You can drop in at any time. All centers are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. Locations of Drop-In Centers are below by boroughs.
