New York City / Department of Homeless Services (DHS) - Shelter System

If you are experiencing unsheltered homelessness and living on the streets or subway, you can get help at Drop-In Centers (DICs). These centers are designed to make getting services easier and to help remove barriers that may be keeping you from taking the first step toward transitional and permanent housing. The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) provides temporary emergency shelter to homeless individuals in a safe environment.DHS sponsors 9 drop-in centers located throughout the city.Drop-in centers provide hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, clothing, medical care, recreational space, employment referrals, and other social services. Staff can also help individuals find a safe and secure place to sleep. All Drop-In Centers operate 24 hours, 7 days a week.

You can also get assistance if you are about to become homeless. If you would like to speak to a counselor, 311 can give you the address of your local HomeBase office.DHS does not provide transportation services to the shelter.
