Are You Ready for a Dog?

Expenses of Having a Dog

There are many expenses when it comes to having a pet. Below I detail just some of them. Before I had Bruno, I didn't put much thought into how much money goes into caring for a dog. For example, veterinary care.

Before Bruno turned one-year-old, I had nearly spent $1,000 on his care. It came as a complete shock. He had an ear infection, and he had to have some baby teeth removed because they didn't fall out on their own. These are the kinds of situations that can arise when you have a pet. Unexpected costs and unexpected illnesses can and do happen.

I didn't realize how expensive it can all get. Although, there are places that you can take your animal to have his regular vaccines that don't cost very much, the care isn't very personalized to your pet. I decided to enroll him in a Banfield veterinary clinic where he can be seen regularly and if for any reason needed to be seen quickly, I could just call and take him in as soon as possible.

Therefore, I enrolled him in a pet health insurance that I pay monthly. It just gives me peace of mind to know he can go somewhere where he will be taken care of. He also gets his teeth cleaned yearly, and those services and many more are worth the price to me.

So, before you decide to get a furry friend, I detailed some of my costs below; so you can get an idea what some people spend yearly on their pets. This way you can be better informed if that is an expense you are able or willing to make when considering if a dog will be a part of your life in the future.

  Annual Expenses
Veterinary Care $720
Dog Food and Treats $300
Toys and Beds $100
Grooming Supplies $150
Yearly Total Expenses: $1,270
*Depending on the care you wish to give to your dog, you can expect to spend a little less or a lot more. These are approximate figures.
