Changes in NBA Rules:

  • In 1954, the 24 second clock was introduced. This rule was implemented so the team that was on offense were given time to put the basketball in the hoop.

  • In 1972, no foul shots are taken, except shooting fouls, until fifth team foul of the period. If a player on offense were to be foul while shooting the basketball were allowed to shoot at the foul line, but if a team fouls the offense five times within the same quarter, the offensive team will be put on the foul line.

  • In 1979, the three-point line was established. I believe this is the biggest change the NBA has ever had. Players began to use this change to their advantage to scoring an extra point.

  • In 1988, the number of referees were increased from two to three. This was done so that there were more eyes on the players to see every call.

  • In 1992, the 24 second clock was reset when an offensive team were to miss a shot, but the ball must have to hit the rim.

  • In 1994, if a player was in the motion of shooting from behind the three-point line was foul, they were awarded with three foul shots. If the three-point shot was made, the player would then receive one foul shot.

  • In 2001, players had to advance the basketball past halfcourt in eight seconds. it decreased from ten seconds. This rule was put in place to help the game move faster.

  • In 2002, Instant Replays were implemented to review plays that were not able to be seen by the referees, this was to help players to get a fair chance at winning the game.

  • In 2018, the shot clock would reset to fourteen seconds if the offensive team would get the ball back after it hitting the rim. Before this rule the clock would go back to twenty-four seconds, this rule put in place also to help the game to move.
