Nichos Nichos are small devotional shadow boxes that are popular in Latin American folk art. They evolved out of the Roman Catholic tradition of displaying a devotional image of a saint or the Virgin Mary to bless a home. Traditionally nichos were carved out of wood or fashioned in tin and usually contain a small devotional painting or statue behind a hinged glass door. They are also usually painted in bright colors or decorated with prosaic items such as glitter or beads. In 1993, Cielito Lindo Studios expanded on this tradition by incorporating non-traditional, secular themes to the nicho tradition. Their nichos incorporate popular culture figures, Day of the Dead skeletal images, along with humorous observations on life. Of course they also create nichos with traditional religious imagery. The studio which is located in San Miguel Allende produces nichos with exceptionally fine painted exteriors. Most of this work is produced by women who work from their homes thereby allowing them to be close to their families while earning an income. The Cielito Lindo studios nichos will delight you with their humor and warmth—qualities that are symbolic of Mexico as a whole.
