Zapotec Rugs The Zapotec people have lived for 2,500 years in the area of what is now the present day state of Oaxaca. The weaving of the Zapotec people has long been respected and admired. In fact, although the Aztecs conquered the area, they left the Zapotecs in peace so that they could continue to produce their fine weavings. In the 1600’s Spanish friars introduced sheep as a source of wool and the European loom—both of which enabled the Zapotecs to produce rugs and serapes. Today the town of Teotitlan del Valle in the foothills of the Sierra Juarez Mountains is a center for the production of Zapotec rugs which are still produced on hand-operated looms. The wool for these rugs still comes from local sheep and is dyed with organic, natural elements. El Corazón de Mexico’s selections allow you to purchase a hand-made rug made with naturally produced ingredients for a very reasonable price. In addition to the artistic quality of each piece, Zapotec rugs are an art form arising out of traditions that are thousands of years old.
