Amazons Parrots

The Amazon Parrot is the common name for a parrot of the genus Amazona. They are mid-size parrots native to the New World ranging from South America to Mexico and the Caribbean. Most Amazon are green, with accenting color that depend on the species and can be quite vivid. Due to the ability to mimic human speech and other sounds the Amazon make a very popular pet or companion parrot. The popularity of this parrot had led to many parrots being taken from the wild to the extent that some species have become threatened. CITES treaties have made trapping wild parrots for the pet trade illegal to protect wild populations. One of the Amazon challenges can be excessive screaming or chewing, especially at certain stages in their life. amazonOnce they are out of the baby stage they can be somewhat naughty, and it is really important to understand them and guide their behavior before an undesirable behavior has been established. Another stage that the Amazon goes through is the Hormonal Aggression. This phase usually appears between the ages of 5 to 12 years. During this time there will be one to two years in which they are likely to be very aggressive. Fortunately, once they go through this, they generally settle down with little or no aggression shown outside the breeding season.amaz
Amazon quickly adopt to their cage environment.  The best adequate suited house for a single Amazon bird would be between 39 in to 59 in, high and have a floor space of 23 in by 39 in.

amazoneatDiet: The Amazon parrots could be fed a formulated diet of either pelleted or extruded, seed only diets. However, a seed only diet offers much more variety but requires additional vitamin and calcium supplements.  Supplement is very important and can be put in an extra dish. Supplement may include fresh fruits and vegetables. Amazons are prone to vitamin A deficiency so high foods like dark green leafy veggies, carrots, mangos and sweet potatoes will help insure a long life for your bird.
