Facebook

Over the years, the community of social networking sites have grown significantly. Majorly due to our society becoming so technology dependable. The site that has arguably made the most profound impact on social media is none other than Facebook. Created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and co-founders  Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin, Facebook has left its mark in history, solidified by the fact that the number of Facebook users has surpassed the 1 billion mark as of the year 2012. Meaning one out of seven people in the world are on Facebook, an extraordinary feat considering Facebook reached the 500 million users milestone just 2 years ago. It shows just how steadily social media sites are growing.

With this new age of social networking, it is noted that social media is one of the most powerful sources for obtaining news information. This especially holds true for the younger demographic, as they account for the majority of users on these sites. Obtaining news and information this way has also shaped the way journalists and news reporters report stories. It has become a way to connect and get closer to the story. Users can share their stories and experiences directly to these journalists and to the news media. Facebook and other social media sites have expanded from it just being a site used by the "average user." From politicians to celebrities, Facebook had become a helpful tool for reaching out to certain demographics.

Although it has been disputed that social media sites like Facebook are hindering our generation due to how reliant we are on them, it certainly has its benefits. Facebook has allowed us to connect to people all over the world. It's allowed us to develop friendships with users over common interests, allowed us to reunite with relatives and old classmates, reach out to the media and so much more.
