Ghana is a country located in West Africa. Originally called the Gold Coast, Ghana was colonized by the British in the 19th century and gained independence on March 6, 1957. English is the official language. However, there are 11 other languages that are nationally recognized with "Twi" being the most widely spoken.
Ghana has many castles and forts built by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British that were unfortunately used to capture slaves and bring them to the Americas during the Atlantic Slave trade. A well known castle called Cape Coast Castle, is now a museum where tourist come to learn about the history of the castle and the conditions slaves were living in before being sent away.
