This series is a story like many others. Some guy wants to take over the world and kill his greatest enemy. But, it evolves into so much more. The book’s main character is Richard Cypher, a woodsman from a place called Westland. His homeland is divided, from the 2 other known lands, by a boundary that is the underworld brought into the land of the living. What lives in the barrier is unable to leave, and what is on one side is unable to pass through it…or so is thought.
Goodkind creates a world that is both huge and varied. The cultures change from place to place as well as what motivates people. The main characters have personalities that can remind you of people from your real life. The dangers are a mix of magical creatures, evil sorcerers, and creations from wizards of old.
Richard is raised without magic. After his father is discovered murdered, he decides to investigate the cause. While on this mission he comes across Kahlan. The two could not be more different though Richard does not immediately know. He decides to go on a quest with her to stop the man who killed his father. But, to do that he must go to a land he has never been, nor does he understand truly, the dangers that lie there.
Kahlan, the last and Mother Confessor. Sent to Westland to search for the great Wizard who created the boundary, and ended the last war between the Midlands and Dhara. Kahlan is a creature of magic, though also human, she has lived a life without friends outside of her sister confessors. Determined to save her people from the master of Dhara the dreaded Darken Rahl, she will risk everything.
The two become fast friends, though Richard is infatuated with Kahlan from first site, this does not prevent them from attempting their quest. With a supporting cast of colorful and serious characters, they are able to overcome all obstacles that stand in the way to accomplishing their quest. As most stories go the two fall in love. But, it is unique as even magic sort to keep them apart.
