History
For those who are just jumping into the series with this latest installment and feel they might get lost without knowing the story from the previous games, don't worry. The games do follow a timeline but do not influence each other heavily enough that one needs to know the events of previous games to fully grasp the story. Now if you want a background on certain characters and the meaning behind certain lines said and actions taken, then playing the previous games are a big help. For those who don't have the time or patience to play through the older, and slower entires, I will provide a brief summary of each entry.
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is the first entry into the series and sets the tone that all future instalments follow, this being a central theme the story tells, explored through the cahracters. The theme of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, or ortherwise known as Disgaea 1, is love and the various forms it can take and be expressed. The story follows the adventures of a demon prince known as Laharl, son of the previous Overlord King Krichevskoy, as he fights to reclaim the throne from the legion of demons fighting to claim it for themselves. He is accompanied on this journey by his loyal(read sadistic) vassal Etna, and a ditzy angel trainee Flonne. The story is a told in a light humorous way, with the occasional serious moment, which is then used by all future entries to tell their stories. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness has been released for five platforms those being the orginal for the PlayStation 2, the remake with added content and renamed Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness for the Nintendo DS, the PlayStation Portable, a PC port, and finally the Playstation Vita.
Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories
Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories takes place two years after the end of the first Disgaea game and is set in a Netherworld called Veldime. This Netherworld was once a human world that was cursed by a demon seeking to claim a Netherworld for himself in order to become an Overlord. This curse turns humans into demons and steals their memories and slowly their personalities. One lone human named Adell manages to be unaffected by the curse and makes it his duty to defeat the Overlord, known as Zenon, in order to break the curse and save his family. He is accompanied by the daughter of the Overlord, Rozalin and her childhood friend and stewerd Tink, who journey across the Nehterworld seeking Rozalin's father each for their own reason. The theme of this story is memories and whether they are a burden or a blessing and this theme is more heavily explored with Rozalin rather than Adell. Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories has been released for four platforms those being the original for the PlayStation 2, the remake with added content and renamed Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days for the PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation Vita, and just recently a PC port.
Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice
Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice takes place a year after the events of Disgaea 2 and takes place in another Netherworld Known as Evil Academy. In this Netherworld most of the demon population are students and the rest teachers. The story follows Mao, son to the Dean of Evil Academy, as he searches for the power of heroes to defeat his dad and claim the title of Dean. He is accompanied by a klutzy human named Almez, a hero in training who came to slay the Overlord before he can kidnap the princess of his kingdom, and his childhood friend Raspberyl, a delinquent among demons for doing good deeds such as volunteer work and blood drives. The theme explored here is justice and whether it is served for righteous reasons or selfish ones. Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice has been released on two platforms, those being the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita, where new content was added and was renamed Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention.
Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten
Disgaea4: A Promise Unforgotten takes place on the farthest point of the timeline, taking place one hundred years after Disgaea 3 and takes place in another Netherworld whose name is never specified so most players just call it the Hades Netherworld as this is where the story begins. The story follows a vampire called Valvatorez, a prinny instructer who was once known as a Tyrant Overlord but lost his powers due to a promise he made in the past. He is accompanied by his fateful steward Fenrich, a werewolf who is always scheming new ways to raise his lord's power for his own goal. The story follow the two on their quest to overthrow the Corrupterment, their government, and the President of the Netherworld. The theme explored is promises and the weight and consequences of making them and breaking them. Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten has been released on two platforms, those being the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, where new content was added and the game renamed Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisted.
Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness
Now I know what you're thinking "shouldn't it be Disgaea 5 next?" and normally you would be right but Nippon Ichi Software have never been known for following the norm when it comes to sequels. Disgaea D2, or simply known as D2, is the 10 year anniversary game developed to take place within the two year gap of Disgaea 1 and Disgaea 2. Once again we join Laharl and his friends on an adventure to gain the respect of the demons he now rules over and solve the mysterious changes happening across the Netherworld. The game once again explores the theme of love but now throws in friendship and the past as a mysterious character called Xenalith appears and has some connection to Etna's past. Disgaea D2 has only been released for one platform that being the PlayStation 3. When questioned if the game would be ported to a portable system, Nippon Ichi System stated that the PSVita could not handle the sheer amount of content found within Disgaea D2 and so will not be ported to the system.
Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance
Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance follows a group of demons seeking revenge against the Demon Emperor Void Dark. This group of rebels consists of six demons, whose names are, Killia, Seraphina, Red Magnus, Christo, Usalia, and Zeroken, who have yet to give up the fight against the Demon Emperor Void Dark and his army of the Lost. Join them as they journey across the Netherworlds, seeking Void Dark and the best means for revenge, in this action packed, over the top, turn based strategy RPG (Role-PLaying Game). The theme of the game is revenge and the chain it creates and the hatred that florishes from it. The game currently has been released on two platforms, the PlayStation 4 and currently in Japan, the Nintendo Switch, the North American release is slated for May 23rd and has been renamed Disgaea 5 Complete as it brings all the DLC for the game but no new added content.
That is the current line up of main series games. I say main series since there are spin-off games like a side-scoreller platformer and even a visual novel game, but since they're spin-offs they don't exactly fit into the timeline to well so most people don't count them as main series games. I hope these summaries were helpful and if they weren't enough you can always play the games youself or even watch walkthroughs online on youtube or read about them on the disgaea wiki page whose link can be found on my additional links page. Thank you for visiting my site and enjoy your stay dood!
