Disgaea 5 logo

This section covers all of the mechanics found in the game from old to new.

Weapon Mastery

Weapon mastery returns once more after being reintroduced in Disgaea D2, as the mechanic was missing from Disgaea 3 and Disgaea 4. Weapon mastery is a simple mechanic that allows the learning of weapon specific skills depending on the level of mastery. This rule applies for all weapons with the exception of staves, and monster only weapons. At level 1 mastery the first weapon skill is learned so on and so forth. The new additions to this mechanic are the monster only weapons, where monster can now gain mastery in their weapon of choice as weapon mastery does not only teach skills but also boost stats by a certain percentage with each level of mastery. The final additon to weapon mastery is armor mastery. This mastery gives a boost in defense for each level of mastery gained. For the exact percentage of boost please check the GameFAQs link in the additional tab.

Magic-Change

Magic-change is a mechanic introduced in Disgaea 3 in which moster characters become weapons for humanoid characters to wield that provide a boost to stats depending on the weapon they become. Magic-change also allows for the use of special skills that can only be used while changed. There is also another feature known as double magic-change, where two monsters becomes weapons wielded by the same unit. The drawback to this mechanic is that this transformation is only tempory, lasting only for three turns including the turn it was activated, this can be extended in the Dark Assembly. The other drawback is that once it runs out the monster character will leave the field and thus you'll be down one unit that will count for your total unit count on the field. How and when to use magic-change will be on your own personal preference, but it is a good tool to use when you want to train weaker units while having strong monster units. Magic-Change is unlocked from the beginning of the game.

Recruiter

The Recruiter allows players to create new generic characters to fill out their party using money instead of Mana. It also allows for the manipulation of the generic characters levels but only to the highest level unit you have. For example if Killia were level 100 when making a new character then use can create them with a starting level of 100, but it will be more expensive as a result so keep that in mind. Sadly not all classes are available from the start. In order to unlock new classes you have to complete their quests from the quest board. Once done you can recruit that newly unlocked class.

Class Proficiency

Class Proficiency is the system used to allow the player to recruit the hier tiers within the classes. Each character you create automatically is assigned their classes' proficiency which their increase by leveling up. 6 Stars is the highest class proficiency and class proficiency doesn't only unlock the hier tiers in a class but also class only Evilities, which I will explain later. Unique characters can also equip class proficiency to use. For instance say you want to unlock the highest tier Valkyrie but don't want to use one. Then simply go to the Dark Assembly and set any of your unique characters' sub-class as valkyrie. Now everytime they level up their slowly build up the class proficiency of the Valkyrie class granting you access to the higher tiers without ever training one. As a plus unique characters who raise class proficiency can also gain access to that classes unique Evilities. Thus another benifit to giving your unique units a sub-class to work on.

Data Shop

The Data Shop shows the players progress and collection, such as playtime, number of cycles completed in the game, the diffirent items in the game listed from rank 1 to rank 40 and so on and so forth. Use this when you want to see if the new weapon you got is of a higher rank then your current one. It is also hear where you can change the music that plays in the Home base, the Item World and the Chara World.

Memory Shop

The Memory Shop allows you to rewatch any scene in your current playthrough as many times as you want. Say you skipped a cutscene by mistake, well now you can rewatch it at the memory shop and catch back up with the current events in the story. You can also use it just to watch the preview scenes again because you need a good laugh.

Innocent Shop

The Innocent Shop allows you to move and store Innocents from items. The reason for doing this is because you find a useful Innocent on a not so useful item. Now you can transfer that Innocent so you sell the item and keep the Innocent for a later time where you can out it into a item you plan to power up. You can also combine Innocents of the same type here to power them up, just know that there is a level limit for each type of Innocents and special Innocents cannot be transfered.

The Item World

The Item World is a staple mechanic of the Disgaea series that all players enjoy as the benefits it provides are multiple. The first benefit it provides is a boost in stats for each floor cleared with additional boosts with each mystery room cleared. The Item world can be cleared by either defeating all units found on it or by stepping onto the dimensional gate. The second benefit the Item world provides is a source of income, mana, and experience as the enemies found in the item world are weaker compared to their dugeon counterpart. The last benefit it provides is equipment found either in tresure chests scattered across the floors or from the bonus quage.

Innocents

Innocents are special beings found in the Item world who grant different abilities depending on their name. The ones you really want to look out for are Staticians, Mangers, Brookers, and Armsmaster. These innocents provide a boost in experience, mana, money, and weapon mastery. Each innocent has a maximum level they can reach where the benefits they provide have been maxed out. These levels can be reached by combining innocents or using another new mechanic added in this entry that I will talk about later.

Hospital

The Hospital does what the name implies, heal your units to their max HP and SP. It also gives out prizes depeding on how much HP and SP is healed. This function takes money to use so keep track of it when grinding levels.

Equipment Shop

The Equipement Shop is where you go when you wish to upgrade your gear. It sells every type of weapon and armor in the game up to rank 38 after which you will need to dive into the Item World to get the higher ranks. There is also a Customer Rank in the Equipment Shop. Raising you Customer Rank is ddone by merely buying items from them. With each new Customer Rank you can buy higher ranking gear, with the higest Customer Rank being 12 which grants access to the rank 38 gear. The gear at Equipment shop are all of the common rariry and do not have Innocents, but at the least you can get stronger gear for the time being.

Item Shop

The Item Shop sells the healing items of the game, such as HP restoratives and SP restoratives. They also sell throwing items for Maid class to use.

Skill Shop

The Skill shop is unlocked from the beginning of chapter 2.The Skill shop allows the player to use Mana to upgrade their skills, such as boosting their damage output and increasing the range of magic skills. Do note that increasing the power of a skill will also raise the SP cost of said skills so keep that in mind when powering them up.If you happen to power up the skill to the point you can't use it then you can choose to weaken the skill, but the Mana used will not be refunded. It also allows you to buy Evilities, which I will explain later, and trade them in for Mana just note you will only get back half the Mana used to purchase the Evility in the first place.

Pirates

Pirates are a function that serve the purpose of being strong oppesition in the Item world along with providing parts for building one's netherworld to use in the Item world to provide certain effects or in the dungeons.

Chara World

The Chara world is a place where you can improve your characters natural abilities in ordr to make them a perfect unit. The Chara world works different in each installment since its introduction in Disgaea 3. In this installment the Chara world is a board game where the goal is to reach the end in a certain amount of turns. In the Chara world a unit's stats, aptitude, weapon mastery, and basic things such as movement and jump ability. In order to move you have a cast a die to determine how far you will move. There are items that you can buy or find in battles that can expand this to a max of three dice for a max of 18 steps taken. While in the Chara world there are three possible outcomes that can happen depeding on where you land. You can have a good outcome, bad outcome, or neutral outcome. These are usually easy to determine as the bad outcomes are usually red tiles while the good are green tiles. The blue tiles are random which at higher difficulties have a chance to be either a hot spring which boost all appitudes by a max of 5% or the secret technique trainer.

Map Editor

Map editor is a mechanic meant for fun as it allows you to edit the base map where you spend most of your time between dungeons. It also allows you to create a map that you can then upload for other players to challenge and rate them. This mechanic can be entirely ignored as it provides no real benefit for completing the game.

Curry Making

Curry making becomes avilable after chapter 5 and allows for the making of various currys that grant different bonuses depending on what ingredients are used to make it. While useful once unlocked, the full pontential of this mechanic is only realised once you reach the post game and gain a good amount of Elixers. By using around 10 Elixers and 100 Thimbels you can create great Elixer curry which boosts your HP(Hit Points) and SP(Special Points) to their max point and it also increases your critical rate to 100%.
